Hmm I didn’t find much information, but the idiom is already used in one of Hans Sachs’ poems. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Sachs
No hints to Shakespeare or Luther.
While the phrase may have been in common speech earlier, it appears that Geoffrey Chaucer may have been the first to put it into print in 1380.

It means, “Don’t interfere with a situation.” This is the same in English and German, I believe.
That’s interesting indeed, since the Chaucer phrase is very much like the German phrase that might translate as “don’t wake a sleeping hound” and not like the English variation.
I love the lines and textures. You have my eye moving a lot in your recent work.
There _are_ so many lines and textures everywhere!
Okay, I’ll try to give your eyes a rest tonight … it’s always nice to have a little assignment: Tonight a photo without lines and textures!
Eh.
However.
I’ll try my best!
:-)
Nothing better than a sleeping dog, but I would just let it lie there if I were you.
Ahh, it’s the same proverb in German! Must be Shakespeare or Luther!
I would never ever …
I’m betting the reference is Shakespeare. Didn’t he coin most of the folk wisdom we regularly quote. Luther was interesting, but a bit less practical.
