“In the end, he kept silent” – The Wind Through the Keyhole by Stephen King

I always enjoy your pictures, Martina, and spend some time trying to figure out what the greater context of the photo is. At first I though this might be a statue one might find at a church or a monastery depicting a priest or a monk reading scripture. However, the hat on the statue is totally out of context with that. Perhaps it’s a seaman or a sailor, writing in the ship’s log? I’m not sure. As usual, the quote is very appropriate to the subject in this photo.
Someone, I guess a tourist, managed to put his/her (though I prefer to think it was a male tourist ;-)) sun hat on the head. Since the statue is high up on top of a gate I can’t imagine how. You either need a ladder or ninja climbing skills or must be a perfect pitcher.
When I realized how the distinction between statue and hat vanished in the b/w photo I thought this would be fun to post. I’ll show a more realistic one on the scrappress, just a second, please …
Wonderful! The hat on this serious status is pure whimsy. Made me laugh. Never occurred to me that the hat was part of the statue even though the tonal range in b&w nicely puts them together. Your quote is also a perfect fit.
Thank you very much! I am quite sure it was a male US tourist ;-) . I like how you can change things, make people laugh, without being destructive. Kind of “street art” at its best.
Gilligan on Gilligan’s Island wore a hat just like this one. Won’t be surprised to discover it was an American tourist, but then it could have been a local ;-)
Everyone wears baseball caps, military, farmers, cops, students, rap singers just to list a few groups and hardly anyone actually plays baseball. Unfortunately it is a sport of declining popularity, but that’s another subject.
Only in Germany, baseball was never a common sport ;-)
Disclaimer: I wear baseball caps, too!
I’ve got several baseball caps myself. One even has a baseball team logo on it.
Mine are all promotional freebies – I usually wear them for inline skating or biking since I don’t like sunglasses.
Just today I was told that I was wearing a cap from 2003 … sometimes the promotional gifts last …
When in-line skating or biking you should wear a good helmet. I recommend a Giro, but any good helmet will do. Don’t want you to lose your mind from a silly accident. Good bike helmets come with sun shades.

:-) – you are absolutely right. This is a statue of Bernard of Clairvaux at Eberbach Abbey.
There is a more realistic photo in the German Wikipedia article about the abbey:

Gee, I never even thought that the hat might not be part of the sculpture. Without the color, it looks just like the rest of the statue.
It’s fun, isn’t it? What one can do with colours (or the absence of) or perspective or ..or .. or …
So gut behütet – da fällt das Wachbleiben vor der interessantesten Lektüre natürlich schwer ;)
Das ist aber keine Schlafmütze ;-)

Aaha, you know, German tourists … they wear … baseball caps, grin. Not that anyone plays baseball around here …
