He was up to something that was bad.
The absence of sound was deeply disturbing.
This was real. The other was a bad dream.
It was a mysterious place and yet somehow friendly.
Forget it as though it had never occurred.
Acknowledging their pain, commiserating with each other.
They appeared to be holding a silent conversation.
It was going to take a long time to get out.
She was stuck here on this street.
The sounds were confusing.
And she thought time had a way of transforming things.
It had never existed anywhere but in her own mind.
Those things had become real to her and they were gone.
The music faded away, returned, was lost again.
What makes you think something happened?
She waited for his answer, leaning toward him.
They had been silent ever since they sat down.
He looked at it in surprise.
He was going to stand there until he got good and ready to go.
He wasn’t ready to go in yet.
He wanted to get some more air and look around a bit.
He strained his eyes in the dark of the room.
How was the crowd tonight?
Do you think it will take very long?
It doesn’t make that much difference to me.
No. He just wanted her. He was intrigued by her.
Was he in love with her? He examined his feeling about her with care.
Yeah, he thought. That’s what it is.
None of it means nothing.
The wind puffed the white nightgown out around her feet.
I understand better than you think.
That was how it started. As simply and as easily as that.
The street would provide plenty of customers.
He was going to have to pay for it.
We got to stay together after this.
I got as much right here as you.
It took her a long time to reach the top floor.
She looked almost as though she were dancing.
The shiny, polished dance floor looked enormous.
From somewhere downstairs there came the sound of laughter, the clink of glasses.
Will you be gone very long?
The dark didn’t bother him when she was with him.
When she wasn’t there, he was filled with a sense of loss.
What would the street do to her?
Nobody knows where he went.
You must have made a lot of noise.
You just wait and see. I’m going to give you everything you ever wanted.
He’s going to stay here with us.
She was tired and irritable and the least little thing upset her.
She knew she was doing a fine job.
