There was too much that could happen
A friend of a friend
Don’t be afraid
He was keen to talk about himself
They might as well keep each other company
He didn’t seem quite so unfortunate
Much of it was just ordinary aging
He seemed at a loss as to what to do without her
Handsome head oversized in relation to the slack, slight body
Its ancientness inscrutable and daunting and moving
The rock face was streaked with moss
They were waiting in shadow
No one spoke or made eye contact
The train paused at a red light on its way into the station
She resented the neighbors always brooding overhead
He had stayed up late, working on his essay
She listened, but heard nothing
She managed to make very little noise
Bad dreams
My mother had always strictly policed the way I spoke at home
I thought I felt the movement of the world turning
Minute wrinkles appeared at the corners
Wherever you go, I said, I’ll follow you
I feel as if it were a mountain to climb
How lucky I was to lie like that
We were private up there
They seemed to talk in code above my head
What does it look like?
But I couldn’t give in
Something has to happen
But my attention is all thrusting forward, onward
A sleepy, viscous, sensuous emanation
She couldn’t go back to that house, obviously
There was nothing I could offer
A blast of wind blowing through space, icy clean
The only outward sign of crisis was the fact that they were drinking sherry
I didn’t want there to be any silences out of which ugly truths might tumble
I can remember being flooded with happiness once
I was the most solitary of all
We were really close, weren’t we?
We could go out in the garden; we could find a local pub
I don’t want anything
You can’t leave me here on my own
She used to seem so glamorous
The curtains were drawn across the windows in all the rooms
