I thought perhaps you’d changed your mind.
And you know it. You can’t kid me.
During the day lean cats napped in the dense shade.
The only thing she could do was to go away and never come back.

She polished one pane of glass over and over.
It was so deadly quiet.
There were so many things she hadn’t said to him.
Forget it as though it had never occurred.

What makes you think something happened?
She waited for his answer, leaning toward him.
He looked at it in surprise.
Was he in love with her? He examined his feeling about her with care.

When she wasn’t there, he was filled with a sense of loss.

But she really didn’t know what it was.
It was like having the earth suddenly open up.
Those who go looking are on a fool’s errand.

Run and get a policeman, I’ll stay here and make sure he doesn’t get away.
I don’t care about all that now.
It just didn’t add up.
He knew how the world worked.
