Keeping accurate time all began with religious people in the Middle Ages needing to know when to get up to pray before dawn. We’ve been measuring seconds, minutes, and hours ever since. But time turns out to be variable. The only constant is the speed of light.

Btw the first were the Egyptians and then the Greek – mostly for measuring time in court and/or parlament.
