It was almost as if the child was waiting for something to happen
He wondered how long ago this had happened
She was ready to leave once more
He was always sure that his mother was alive
She looked at him and nodded cheerfully
As the year went on, and spring gave way to summer
The house had a smell of damp and old cooking
How was I supposed to know the story wasn’t original?
The sight of such devotion acted as a reminder
The koala looked up, understandingly, into its companion’s eyes
The actress put out her hand
An agonized cry and some animal howling
Are you looking at my knees?
No, I’m way above that
He rose from his chair and put on his hat
He, of all people, knows what’s real and what’s not
He can see her reflection in the bathroom mirror
Every elf and fairy sprite hop as light as bird from brier
They’re so judgmental
It was a yard wide, half as much tall … it didn’t do much
An old lampshade of rainbow-colored glass
Zipping past the white fencing and rusting wire
I smelled the sweetly muddy fumes of the potato fields
We were so grateful just to be there
Can you tell me a bedtime story?
To strive, to seek, …
… to find, and not to yield
I’ll miss you too, Pig!
Begirt with many a blazing star …
… Stood the great giant Algebar
We decided to see if we could make ourselves motionless
Stars, hide your fires
Let not light see my black and deep desires
We could help one another through it
They won’t just come out and say, …
… and no one is allowed to see the whole picture
I slept most of the afternoon and woke up feeling terrible
Now something funny happened inside of my head
Colorful insects flew around
That remembered image was all I had to go on
The place began to hum and rumble
A few hundred people lived here, at least in the summer
People came here to hunt in the autumn
Thinking is a physical process that goes on in your nerve tissue
There was a lot he didn’t know, …
… but nothing he was afraid to ask about, …
… and ask about, and ask about, …
… until he understood it perfectly
You always end up with the same answer
There was a lot of green and growing matter
