What now?
Maybe I wasn’t really talking; maybe I was only listening
We set off down the culvert under a sky of silvery stars
A small boat waited for us there
I wondered what the danger was
We left all at once, at night
It was plain that something had changed
I could never really understand why it haunted me
I knew exactly what was next
A whole year of history
A whole year of people’s lives
I could hear a rustling sound just around the corner
The beast hugged me to its breast
I knew exactly what to do, and I wasn’t afraid
There were all sorts of things I had forgotten
I jumped up and started looking around
But the beast was gone
How did we get here?
I’d said see you soon to the people at work
There was a party I’d promised I’d go to
I had a headache that wouldn’t let up
It had been an ordinary day, to a point
It had never stabilized
Weeks passed like time under water
You know he’s going to be waiting when we come out
The air was chilled, and stank like rotten roots and sewage
You can’t hurt me
Things began to happen
It didn’t seem to matter
He didn’t try to merge
Are you going to let him just do that to you?
There’s nothing else you can do
The boys called him a coward
This might have been cool
It was a tiny, deeply threatening invasion
Gone fishin’
That’s only the beginning
That doesn’t make any sense, though
Let’s think about a vertical light clock moving in a horizontal direction
You will measure time passing at exactly the same rate
Even that is not enough for some humans, though
The keeping of accurate time is of great importance to the human civilization
The speed of light in a vacuum is a defined quantity: 299,792,458 m/s exactly
All observers will measure the same speed of light
It’s a nice day ̶̶ there’s no rush
Light moves through empty space with a single speed, no matter what the observer is doing
It’s a lot of space to fill with stuff
There is no such thing as an absolute time
The only force that acts is gravity
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
